i'm thirty-five and i am an ancient boy. i don't know a lot about the world but it's been stripped of all its joy. i've never learned to change a tire but for the last ten years or so i have been incredibly tired (and i cannot use an iron). live like i'm twenty, feel like i'm eighty, look like i'm fifty, cry like a baby. am i an adult or just pretending? is it my youth or my life that's ending? i'm thirty-five. i'm horrified when i look at my peers. they are all so far ahead of me in spite of my advancing years, but i am not jealous of that rank: kids, promotions, RRSPs. i've only got myself to thank (and ten bucks in the bank). my hair is greying, my skin is flaking, i am decaying, there all is aching*. i'm thirty-five. bill hader hairline, keys that i can't find, eighty percent blind, and "i feel like shit" is the new "i'm fine". with half my life gone, i'm acquiescing: i never grew up, just stopped pubescing. i'm thirty-five.
